Oneness-Family School First in D.C. Region to Minimize Online Distractions
for Students with NetRef

Applicable to 1:1 or BYOD environments, new Internet management system safeguards all web access points and saves schools time, money and IT resources

Chevy Chase, Md., June 9, 2015—Oneness-Family School is the first in the DC Metro Area to install NetRef, the first-ever Internet management tool that safeguards all web access points across a school’s networks and on all imported devices, helping teachers maximize the web as an educational and collaborative learning tool. With seamless and simple integration, NetRef offers umbrella protection across all systems, hardware and devices—from 1:1 to Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) environments, minimizing distractions and helping keep students on-task.

Oneness-Family School’s mission is to provide a Montessori learning environment that fosters the growth of the whole person, encompassing physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual development. From preschool to middle school, Oneness School emphasizes a mindfulness-based approach to education, placing importance on independence in their mixed-age classrooms. Rooted in educator Maria Montessori’s century-old adage “follow the child,” the school’s innovative, evidence-based curriculum places equal emphasis on personal growth, academic excellence and global citizenship.

“Keeping students focused and safe while they explore and learn is crucial at Oneness-Family School, where we emphasize discovery without direct instruction and strive to equip students with the skills necessary for navigating the global 21st century,” said Founder and Head of School Andrew Kutt. “As a small, independent school, we need technological solutions that are affordable and manageable as digital learning expands. We found NetRef’s application to be ideal.”

Easy to use, NetRef allows teachers to manage their classroom Internet usage via an intuitive touch-screen panel. Teachers can program domains and applications relevant to lesson plans and receive real-time alerts when a student wanders off-task. NetRef also produces daily and monthly reports that detail how the Internet is being deployed by pupil, classroom, grade and school, allowing administrators to maximize their investment in educational technology (EdTech).

“As EdTech increases in prevalence and BYOD becomes the norm, school administrators need tools that can manage a host of devices without breaking the bank or requiring an IT expert for installation and management,” said Verite Educational Systems CEO George Dotterer who co-developed NetRef after searching for a solution to keep his own children safe online. “We are delighted to collaborate with the administrators and teachers at Oneness-Family School who share both our values in education and our goal to safeguard the Internet as a rich source of information and wonder for students.”

The software operates with all web browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. It also operates with iOS, Android, ChromeBook and Windows-tablets, along with their respective apps.

During a successful beta roll-out at a large high school in the Washington, D.C. metro region last year, Verite’s team collaborated closely with teachers, administrators and IT leaders to incorporate user feedback into the product to fine tune and enhance NetRef’s functionality.

NetRef has future plans to roll out a home version to families, linking school to home and ensuring that kids are safe and productive online, whether at school, at home or on the go.
