Miami Public Charter School First in U.S. to Adopt Educational Technology Tool That Protects Students and Maximizes Online Learning

Pinecrest Preparatory Middle-High School to Install NetRef, New Software that Helps
Teachers Manage Internet Access With One Touch

Miami, Fla. and Dulles, Va., September 30, 2014 — Pinecrest Preparatory Middle-High School (PPMH) and Verite Educational Systems announced  today that PPMH is the first school in the nation to adopt NetRef, a new educational technology that protects students online by managing Internet access across the school, in the classroom and by student. The first-ever educational security system that safeguards all Internet access points on school- and student-owned digital devices, NetRef helps teachers keep students on task with just one touch.

At PPMH, students bring their own devices to class, known as a “BYOD” environment, and they access the academic curriculum via the Internet. As tablets replace textbooks, students are increasingly online in school and have the potential to get distracted by social platforms, such as Instagram and Snapchat. With NetRef, PPMH’s teachers will be able to set the digital boundaries their students need to be productive and focused. Easy to use and integrate, the intuitive software provides umbrella protection across the school’s network and maximizes technology as a teaching tool.

“We invest in our teachers and students by adopting state-of-the-art technologies that simplify classroom management and provide the leading-edge tools our students need to realize their potential academically and grow into responsible digital citizens,” said Betty Nuñez, Principal of PPMH. “We are excited to pioneer the use of NetRef in our school and to work closely with the NetRef team to integrate the solution into our existing IT system.”

An assistant principal from PPMH discovered NetRef while attending the annual conference of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) in June in Atlanta, where she was impressed with the comparative advantages NetRef featured over competing products.

Created by a team of high-technology experts from Verite Educational Systems, based outside of Washington, D.C., NetRef operates with all web browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. It also operates with iOS, Android, ChromeBook and Windows-tablets, along with their respective apps.

Commenting on the first agreement to install NetRef, co-developer and Verite Educational Systems CEO George Dotterer said, “We are delighted to collaborate with the administration at PPMH in rolling out our solution that safeguards the Internet as a rich source of information and wonder for students while keeping them safe and minimizing distractions.”

During a successful beta test at a large high school in the Washington, D.C. metro region earlier this year, Verite’s team collaborated closely with teachers,
administrators and IT leaders to incorporate user feedback into the product to fine tune and enhance NetRef’s functionality.

NetRef plans to roll out a home version to families in spring 2015, linking school to home and ensuring that kids are safe and productive online, whether at school, at home or on the go.
